About 'used car audi a3'|Audi A3 Cabrio
Back in 2009 I wrote an article on what one could expect from the Avis rental car lineup. Traveling heavily I thought it timely to revisit the subject with new insights and perspective. So I ask myself, do I present these in random order, best first, worst first. We'll just have at it and see what evolves. Maybe I'll start with the rental I'm using now. Honda Accord - It is so difficult to judge this vehicle fairly, and it's Avis fault. Why you ask? This is the first car I've had in... at least a year that was what I'd consider a stripped down version. Everything else I've received at least had bluetooth connectivity in the radio. What's that you ask? I could climb into the rental and connect my cell phone to the cars radio and speak hands free, pretty significant here in Billings Montana where they have a distracted drivers law. On your first offence you get fined $100-$500, second time and after, $500. Why would you have non-bluetooth cars in town like this? Okay, bluetooth aside, the car has excellent power and either has a 60 gallon fuel tank, or really sips fuel because in 5 days I've been here, driving about 40 miles a day, it's only used about a third of a tank. Comfort is mixed; it has everything you expect in modern, manually adjustable seats, except a lumbar adjustment. "Well I never touch that" you may say, but the problem is that it feels like it's adjusted as high as possible, like a pillow behind your back! Either I am retarded, or blind because in the two times I have searched the seat controls I have been unable to figure out how to de-lumbarize the seat and theres nothing about it in the owners manual, I checked! I had intended to use any days off to drive to Glacier National Park, but with this seat, no way! Ford Fusion - Another mixed bag her. On my second and third trips to Billings this year I received a Ford Fusion. I had all but given up on Fords after owning many over the years. The Fusion had really made me start rethinking my position, I loved this car! It had the bluetooth connectivity I want and Sync is fantastic if you carry music on your cell. Great power, fuel economy and the seats had all controls easily accessible. Now the downside, on my current trip my partner has the newly arrived, stripped down version of the Fusion and according to him and the gentleman I came here to relieve that also had a Fusion (and had formerly had the earlier version), the new stripped down version sucks! Less comfortable and feels much cheaper all the way across the board. Maybe someone needs to contact Ford and let them know that Avis is sabotaging future Fusion sales because nobody would be impressed enough with the latest rentals to want to go purchase one. Buick LaCross - While we're covering my adventures in Billings, I arrived in the middle of January to very cold and snowy conditions. To my utter amazement, they gave me a Buick LaCross, an all the bells and whistles version with leather, etc. I'd owned a '97 Skylark that served me faithfully for years, but had wondered why people purchased these larger models. After three weeks in the LaCross, I understood. Comfort, convenience, the remote start was awesome when it was -20 outside. This is a vehicle I would seriously consider purchasing for my family. Hyundai Santa Fe - Everything I cited as good in the Santa Fe still holds true, plus... PLUS now it has some get up and go. In my prior review my only negative had been the lackluster performance, you know, the stomp on the gas, get pushed back in the seat experience. Not that I'm out drag racing in a Santa Fe, but when you need to get on the freeway etc, it is sure nice when the vehicle responds and the new Santa Fe certainly does this. This would sit on that list of cars to consider for the family. Toyota Corolla - My company orders mid-sized vehicles and when I stopped at the Avis counter in Mobile Alabama to pick mine up, this was the insult I was slapped in the face with. The only thing that would have made the rental worse was if it had an AM only radio. If you're on a budget and the sub-sub-sub compact is all that fits the budget, it will get you from here to there, but do not expect anything more from the stripped down version provided. Chrysler Sebring - When I saw Chrysler, my bran fixed itself upon the 300. Apparently the Sebring is the Corolla competitor in the Chrysler lineup. Maybe this was some Chrysler Corp experiment in exactly how uncomfortable they could make a car? Unimpressive handling and the second worst seats I've ever experienced. Even the aforementioned Toyota Corolla had much more comfortable seats that this atrocity. Now maybe Avis orders them real dumbed down, with industrial grade, forklift bench seats but, after we were forced to drive from Pascagoula to Houston, I thought I would be permanently paralyzed from these seats. Finally, the one vehicle I would go out and buy for myself today if it were available in the United States. I recently took a trip to Frankfurt Germany and was surprised to learn that they actually rent Porsches there. Sadly, only briefly though, my reservation was for something less exotic. I arrived in my space, which in Frankfurt feels like it's a kilometer or so away, to find an interesting little Audi A3 Sportwagon. All the luggage fit, and I travel with two huge bags, I climbed in, bluetooth, leather, everything one could ask for in a nice rental. Ah. a turbo diesel, better store that in the back of my mind for when I purchase fuel. As I reached the Autobahn I noticed everything over to the left passing by at higher rates of speed than we're accustomed to in the States. I said what the heck and downshifted. My car topped out at... I forget the KPH but it converted to 113MPH. definitely not a dragster, but it felt absolutely, rock solid and safe at this speed. On one occasion I stopped at a light and knocked it out of gear, did I mention it was a stick? Suddenly, the engine died, for a second I panicked and got it restarted, and then started wondering. Sure enough at the next light, out of gear, engine off, push in the clutch and it restarted by itself, very cool. This works well with the German light sequence of green, yellow, red, yellow, green as when the second yellow comes up, you push in the clutch and are ready to go when the green appears. After 3 weeks and almost 1000 miles driving, I almost cried when it came time to turn it in. I was in love with this little champ. By the way, the Avis person told me they owned the 6 cylinder version and said it will do closer to 150MPH, not that 113 isn't fast enough for any US road. Nice power, unbelievable economy and a fantastic all around smaller car! |
